Give Us This Day
BY JOHN S. DE MARTELLY
ALTHOUGH THE LOCA.LE OF Give Us This Day is Missouri,
the lithograph has a timeless quality. Yet, as Mr. de Martelly
has been at pains to point out, the dry, brilliant warmth of a late summer sun
that pervades the picture is a locally observed phenomenon. The effect of that
sunlight is something of a technical triumph, but it was not this that chiefly
prompted the artist to create Give Us This Day.

Rather, it was his sympathy
with his fellow men in their battle with life. Mr. de Martelly has said with undue modesty:
“There is a slight touch of the spiritual that has stolen into Give Us This Day.”
John S. de Marte11y, though born in Philadelphia, has resided in
Kansas City, Missouri, for many years, and knows the state and its people thoroughly.
Painter, etcher, lithographer, illustrator, and teacher, the thirty-six-year-old artist
has achieved a more than local eminence. His best work shows appreciation of,
but not subservience to, tradition. In short, he bears watching.
