Aspects of Suburban Life – Polo Spill BY PAUL CADMUS
CADMUS WAS WELL TAUGHT. He is a pupil of Joseph Pennell, Auerbach-Levy, Charles Locke, and Jared French.
His work throbs with native genius controlled carefully learned lessons. Cadmus’ style is his own, or at least he has his own shrines at to worship. Polo Spill, a print made
after the original mural in the American legation building at Ottawa, Canada,
is medieval in style and fiavor. The caricature, the violence of the attitudes,
the stylized glory from the heavens-all derive from Durer and Schongauer.
